If your phone just got wet: switch it off immediately if it's still on. Don't try to charge it, don't use a hairdryer, and avoid pressing buttons repeatedly. Bring it in as soon as possible — time matters with water damage.
What actually happens inside a wet phone
Water itself doesn't usually cause immediate component failure — the danger comes from what happens next. When liquid enters a device, it carries dissolved minerals and contaminants that deposit on the circuit board as the water evaporates. Over time, those deposits cause corrosion, and corrosion causes short circuits and component failure.
This is why a phone can sometimes seem fine immediately after getting wet, only to develop faults over the following days or weeks. The damage is happening gradually inside, even when the device appears to be working.
The goal of water damage treatment is to disassemble the device, clean the board thoroughly, remove any corrosion deposits before they cause further harm, and assess what components — if any — have been affected.
Our water damage process
-
1
Intake and initial checks
We note the nature of exposure (water, other liquids), how long ago it happened, and whether the phone was on. We check the liquid contact indicators inside the device.
-
2
Disassembly
We open the device carefully, disconnecting the battery first. We document the internal state before cleaning begins so we can explain what we found.
-
3
Board cleaning
We use isopropyl alcohol and appropriate tools to clean the circuit board, ports, and connectors. This removes mineral deposits and halts the corrosion process.
-
4
Drying and assessment
The components are dried thoroughly. We then assess which parts appear intact and which may have been affected — and explain our findings clearly.
-
5
Reassembly and testing
If the prognosis is positive, we reassemble the device and test all core functions. We'll tell you honestly if there are remaining issues and what options exist.
Being honest about outcomes
Water damage is one of the less predictable types of repair. The outcome depends on several factors: the type of liquid involved, how long the device was submerged or exposed, whether the phone was on at the time, and how quickly it was brought in for treatment.
We don't promise any specific result for water damage cases, because we genuinely don't know what the board looks like until we open it. What we can promise is that we'll tell you exactly what we find, explain the realistic options, and let you decide how you want to proceed.
In some cases, water damage may have caused irreversible harm to certain components. In others, a thorough clean-up is all that's needed. We can't know without looking, and we'll be straight with you either way.
Due to the unpredictable nature of water damage, we are unable to offer the same workmanship warranty terms as other repairs. We'll explain the specific terms for your device at the point of assessment.
What to do if your phone just got wet
The most important thing is to act quickly and carefully:
- Turn it off immediately if it's still on — do not wait
- Remove the case and SIM tray if possible
- Pat dry with a clean cloth — don't rub aggressively
- Do not attempt to charge it or plug anything in
- Do not put it in rice — this is a common misconception and wastes valuable time
- Bring it in for assessment as soon as possible
The sooner we can inspect and clean the board, the better the chances of preventing lasting damage.
